First snow

As promised by the weather weenies, it snowed Sunday night.  By Monday morning some 6-7 inches had accumulated, which when melted registerd .23 in the gauge.  Monday and Tuesday weren’t suitable for outdoor work but Wednesday wasn’t too bad so I spent a couple of hours at the Bluff doing what I could.  Thursday and Friday were really nice days but Saturday a cold front blew in and today (Sunday) we’re enjoying a wind chill of 17°.  The forecast is for daytime highs in the 60s this coming week which will be nice since the full contingent of granddaughters will be here and no doubt will want to run and play.  Heck, I want to run and play, too.

Kari and Abigail visited Baylor University Friday.  I’m told Abigail’s desire to attend that institution of higher learning was reinforced.  If she goes there they will have to sell Rebecca to the gypsies to afford it but that seems like a small price to pay, no pun intended.  Kari also liked the environment there.  She said it felt somehow more scholarly.   The campus in general seemed quieter than she expected, fewer students moving around.   Maybe they locked them in the basement for visitation day.  It’s a six hour drive if you don’t get tangled up in Fort Worth rush-hour traffic so I guess we won’t see much of the Abster if she goes there.  Then her career goals are likely to take her even farther afield.  But her happiness is all we care about so we’ll just have to remember the good times.

Li’l r and I get together on Saturday afternoons to strum our guitars.  I enjoy that and I think she does, too.  We have been meeting in the man cave but yesterday being a blustery cold day, I went down there and we got together in her bedroom.  Tino joined us and we were all snuggy.  Rebecca is learning to learn to play the guitar and doing a good job of it.  She’s starting out at a good time in her life and shows indications she will persist.  Vivian got a guitar for Christmas last year, one that only has the top three strings, and, though she and I aren’t together often, she does seem interested and willing to spend a little time with it when I’m around.  I don’t know what she does when I’m not.  She’s really young, of course, but the guitar she has is easier to play for a person her size and age and gives her ample opportunity to start the journey.  Time will tell.

This week I got started on turning loose of some of the relics around here.  Most people put that off too long and before they know it, it’s someone else’s problem.  I trashed some things and gave others to Goodwill, some of which had served no useful purpose for 70 years or longer.   For many projects the hard part is starting.  Based on the pattern of the last month, there will frequently be days this winter that aren’t suitable for outdoor activities, so I won’t have any excuse for not spending part of that indoor time on divestiture.  At least I’ve made a start.
