October ramble
  • Arizon river

It was like looking down at the top of a cloud, which I guess we were when we visited the north rim of the Grand Canyon.  We had driven in rain from time to time ever since we started our trip and it was cool and cloudy when we visited Petrified Forest National Park on the first day out.  The Painted Desert had received a lot of rain and the washes were running bank to bank with muddy water.  We drove through snow and sub-freezing temperatures as we approached the north rim.  That didn’t seem to deminish the crowds, though.  The north rim is supposed to be less frequented than the south, and it may be, but that’s not to say it isn’t frequented.  There was a generous sprinkling of foreigners judging by the gibberish being spoken.  For the most part the canyon was socked in but it cleared enough before we left for us to get a taste of the beauty and immensity of the Grand Canyon. Red River 2018
  • Red River 2018

As the Red River Fourth of July parade shuffled by, I was sitting in my lawn chair surrounded by wife, daughters and granddaughters, all of us arrayed in our Homegrown Keeter Produce t-shirts.  I was minding my own business and taking it all in when the Citizens Against Violence (CAV) float came along.  It was really just a pickup with some bunting draped on it and there were several women in the bed waving to the crowd lining the route.  As the float drew even with us one of the women leveled her water gun at me with gleeful malice. On the road

We arrived at our hotel in Cortez, Colorado eleven hours to the minute after driving off from good ol’ SA.  Between Cimarron and Taos we encountered falling snow but the skies cleared and we enjoyed driving into the setting sun from Durango to Cortez.  Though it was Joyce’s birthday and we’d thought we would have a nice dinner somewhere to celebrate, we were just glad to get off the road and settled for salads at Wendy’s.The next evening we had that birthday dinner at the Destination Grill next door to the hotel, if hamburgers qualify for a birthday dinner.  They weren’t average hamburgers so maybe it was OK.  Continue reading “On the road”

Las Vegas

It was hot in Las Vegas last week, where Joyce and spent several days.  ICS asked me to visit a customer there that was asking for user training.  People at ICS were taking vacations during August when the customer wanted to schedule the training, and with ICS running shorthanded, they turned to me.  I was glad to help and Joyce was glad to go along for the fun of it. Caribbean cruise

Despite some tense moments catching our flight to Fort Lauderdale, our Caribbean cruise went smoothly and we enjoyed it.  I misjudged the time it would take to get to the boarding gate from Wylie world where we spent the night.  When we checked our bag, we were told it was a late check and might not make the flight, which would have meant we would embark on the cruise with toothbrushes, pajamas and not much more than the cloths on our back.  We were greatly relieved when our bag came around on the baggage claim carousel.
