Probably a decade ago or more Grady gave Joyce an orchid, maybe one he’d raised in his greenhouse. It has prospered in spite of depredations by little people over the years. Those little people have all reached an age where they don’t present a threat to orchids or other tender things around the house and Joyce thinks this year’s bloom is the prettiest to date. If not, it’s got to be hard to tell the difference.
Our weather was windy this week. It blew like the devil out of the southwest and the north, fortunately not at the same time. Friday it blew all day out of the southwest until a cold front blew in and didn’t stop blowing until sometime in the wee hours Sunday morning. Today we have a respite. It will only be today. One thing the weather prognosticators always get right is that it will be windy and they say it will blow again starting tomorrow. They keep trying to forecast rain but that’s a fool’s errand.
Joyce and I will take advantage of the pleasant weather today to plant tomatoes. Last week she worked on cutting new skirts for the tomato cages, the old skirts having seen better days. I have the tomato patch all ready to receive the seedlings. It should go pretty well.
Yesterday there was a training class for the people wanting to join the Texas Master Naturalists. The morning was spent out at the Crossbar northwest of town. Current members can join any of the training classes and I might have gone to the morning session if the weather had been pleasant. The afternoon class was held at Wildcat Bluff and I understood it was going to be indoors. The topic was grasses and soils, which interested me, so I showed up there hoping to learn something. Apparently I misinterpreted the email sent out about it yesterday morning. When I got there, dressed appropriately for a couple of hours indoors, it was announced the information would be disseminated on a hike. I gave it a try but the wind was cold and made it hard to hear what the expert guiding the hike was saying so I veered off on a cow trail and circled back to my car and home.
