Abigail played in a basketball game last week. She didn’t get many minutes but they were the first since her ankle was sprained last year. She managed a nice assist, too. They clobbered a hapless Lubbock Coronado team. We’ve been on the wrong side of some of those blowouts this season so it was nice have it go our way this time. The Abster’s freshman team played AHS Saturday morning, a game she wanted badly to win because of one particular AHS player who went to Crockett with her, played on the A-team and was condescending toward the B-team players. Unfortunately the Rebel girls sleepwalked through the first half and, though they won the second half, they couldn’t close the gap before time ran out.
Friday night we watched the junior varsity come from behind to beat them pesky Sandy girls. The Rebels got down early but pulled even when they hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the half. After that game we watched the varsity girls give it a go. It didn’t end well. The Rebels were down 21-4 at the half, fought back in the second half but fell 28-22, or something like that. They held the Sandies scoreless in the third and only gave up seven points in the fourth, but they just couldn’t overcome their atrocious shooting. They were missing uncontested layups, for crying out loud. If I was guessing, I would say that the AHS girls were more the product of club basketball year around while the Rebels played pickup basketball. There was probably a socioeconomic factor involved. We left before the boys varsity played. The gym was packed by then and though I would have liked to see them play, they being highly ranked in the state, we’d had enough.
Later Saturday we went to Rebecca’s game and sat through the usual drubbing. I though Rebecca did a pretty good job playing with good technique. She played solid defense and handled herself well the time or two she she got the ball. She’s not the most aggressive player but is perfectly willing to get the ball and try to do something with it.
In other news, we’ve had more wind than we like lately. Combined with low temperatures, it made for uncomfortable weather. Wednesday and Thursday were tolerable, though, and I managed to haul off most of the trimmings I’d accumulated through January. We haven’t had much moisture over the last month but found the ground to be reasonably moist when we buried an expired chicken. It’s been a nice respite not having to water. I see a few things — snapdragons, salvia and such — that look like they may survive the winter, which makes me wonder if having adequate water allows them to survive. I haven’t been water things like that during the cold months thinking they would just die anyway but maybe I’m wrong.
