Icy fingers

It has been difficult to avoid winter’s icy fingers this week. It isn’t just that the temperatures have been low — lows in the single digits, highs in the teens — but the cloud cover prevents the sun from helping out. The temperature in the shop has gotten down to 30 degrees and it has never been below 40 degrees before. The south and east facing windows help it stay much warmer than the outside temperature in spite of no heat. I’ve abandoned the cave and stayed in the house the last few days because it seemed silly to try to heat even just the corner where my desk is enough to be comfortable. We are already running space heaters in the chicken house and guinea tower 24 hours a day just to try to keep the fowl alive. The electricity bill will be bad enough with adding to it unnecessarily. The Abster holds her team’s city championship trophy
Champs
Crockett 7th grade girls silver basketball team
Undefeated city champs and the epitome of female pulchritude.

They aren’t taller/bigger.  They aren’t faster.  No single player stands out.  There aren’t any stars.  But they are the undefeated city champs of 7th grade girls basketball, silver team.  As expected, it came down to Crockett and Austin after Crockett dispatched Fannin on Thursday and blew out De Zavala Saturday morning in the city championship tournament.  Though they beat Austin Wednesday in the match-up of undefeateds, there was no overconfidence.  It had been a close game.

Crockett lead by six points at the half but the Austin girls gave it all they had in the second half.  Both teams wanted to win very badly and Austin even took a one point lead briefly in the fourth quarter.  But as they had done all season long, Crockett pulled away down the stretch for a 32-25 win to take home the city championship trophy.  The Abster was on the floor in the final minutes when Crockett was clinging to a 27-25 lead.  With over a minute left she helped her team hold Austin scoreless while her teammates added a couple of goals which aloud me to start breathing again.

One win

Crockett defeated Fannin 27-13 in the first round of the city tournament Thursday evening.  The Abster had three points on a field goal and a foul shot.  She played solid defense and pulled down several rebounds.  Next game is Saturday morning.  Win that one and they play for the city championship Saturday afternoon.

Undefeated

What better way to end the regular season than with a match-up between Abigail’s undefeated Crockett Pioneers and the likewise undefeated Bears of Austin Middle School.   Crockett took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter only to have it melt away like snow in Texas.  Austin pulled to within a point with less than two minutes on the clock.  It looked like this hard-fought game would come down to one shot.  Which team would sink the game winner.  Fortunately a girl name Baily (sp?) stepped up for Crockett by drilling one outside the 3-point line (they don’t award 3 points at this level).  She added two more buckets before time ran out to give Crockett a 24-18 win.  The game was much closer than that score indicates.  On to the city tournament.
