After a frigid start to the week, our weather finally broke and by Thursday, if it wasn’t nice, it was at least nicer.  Friday morning out at the Bluff I expected it to be pretty cold but with the light winds and bright sunshine it wasn’t anytime before I was shedding layers.  The forecast for the coming week is for mild weather, which will be handy with Jill and them Wylie girls visiting SA.  They should be able to be outside playing quite a bit.  Unfortunately, the Amarillo ISD spring break isn’t until next week so Li’l r won’t be able to play with them until after school.  However, I think Kari plans to take her out of school at noon so maybe it won’t be so bad.  Of course Kari may wind up in the penitentiary for taking her child out of the public school gulag but that seems like a small price to pay. As I sit in my box of warm air gazing out at an icy world, I think of  poetry and realize, and not for first time,  I have none in me.    I’ll just scribble a little about the late, unlamented month just past.

Snow and cold come to mind first, but there was also some decent weather with a few beautiful days sprinkled in to keep our spirits up.  The moisture, though not abundant, coming on the heels of that that we got in January was gratifying.    Compared to last year, it has been a veritable bonanza so taken all around, February was a good month.  Joyce and I finished  off the last of our firewood Friday and Saturday as we lazed around the house reading, watching TV and generally wasting time.  I managed to get out to the Bluff Wednesday and continue cleaning up the grounds.  It was a little chilly when I started about 9 a.m. but soon warmed up to something more comfortable.   I also patched a leaky PVC pipe connection in the catchment system and felt satisfied with myself. Since we last spoke, two snows have come and one has gone.  There have been lovely days and days more suitable for reading by the fire, which is what Joyce and I did all afternoon Sunday.  We kept a cheery fire going and settled into our blankets with our iPads.  There was hot chocolate, too.  This was after church, of course.  It was Joyce’s day to work in the coffee shop after church.  Otherwise she claims she would have skipped church.  The roads were slippery going and coming home but we managed without incident. Abigail’s basketball team won the girls eighth-grade-sliver city championship Saturday.  For those of you scoring at home, that’s back to back  championships with only one regular-season loss in two years.  That loss was to Bonham Middle School in the first game of the season.  Maddie, one of the mainstays of the team, wasn’t available in that game because she was needed to fill in for a girl on the gold team and without her Bonham eked out a narrow win over Crockett.  It is said that revenge is a dish best served cold and so it was on Saturday, 35-24.  I couldn’t really get myself to be nervous about the outcome because not only were they at full strength with Maddie in the lineup but our Abster was not the same player she was at the start of the season.  She always hustled and she contributed on defense but she wasn’t comfortable with the ball in her hands and would always pass off as soon as she could.  She had no points in the first game and probably didn’t take any shots.  Saturday she was the top scorer with 10 points, three for 12 from the field and four for six from the free throw line.  That wasn’t a fluke, either.  She had been producing those kinds of number for the last month.  I just figured if both teams played about the same way as the first time around, Maddie and Abigail’s scoring production would make a difference.  Continue reading “Revenge” →
