Two snails

They wanted to help, so I let them help.

There are two new (fresh) snails in the aquarium, along with a new plant and a new fish called a redtail, because it has a red tail, you see.  The snails have been cavorting all over their new home, to the extent snails cavort.  It seemed to make sense to have two so if one dies there should be one left to carry on until a replacement arrives.

Abigail participated in a track meet this week.  She has to run track because she plays basketball and volleyball but she’s not a fan of the workouts.  In the meet she ran the 100 yard and 300 yard hurdles, coming in fifth overall in both.  She came in second in her heat in the 300 and third in her heat in the 100.  She said the track meet was fun and she enjoyed it as opposed to the workouts.  However she was sore, having not really run the hurdles in practice.

The big women took the little women on a field trip to the farm we get our milk from Thursday afternoon.  Its down by Abernathy.  There were lots of new calves for them to see and pet.  Kari didn’t get back in time to pick the Abster up from school so I filled in.  How strange to pick my granddaughter up from school at the same place my mom used pick me up, lo, these many years ago.  I didn’t anticipate that as an eighth-grader.

Its hard to imagine that we’ve gotten over a week of pleasant weather by any standards in early March.  It has been such a contrast from the prior week of cold, snow and wind but we quickly adapted.

Chris’s bees have discovered the birdbath in our backyard.  Joyce isn’t pleased.  Some of them manage to get in the water and can’t get out.  I don’t see the problem since the birds aren’t going to be bothered by the bees and the cats mostly visit the birdbath after dark long after the bees have returned to the hive, those that haven’t managed to drowned themselves.  I guess for the bees its the equivalent of loafing around the office water cooler.

After a pleasant week of togetherness including a weenie roast Saturday evening, the next morning Jill and the girls departed for home.  They will be back in three weeks for Easter, I’m told.  Sunday was such a nice day I didn’t want spend it inside so I recruited L’l r to go to the Bluff with me and hike around a bit. We saw a dead mouse and some frog eggs.

Joyce and Chris ganged up Rojo the rooster this week and removed his spurs.  Since Chris killed and ate the black rooster, Rojo has had nothing to keep them worn down on and they had grown to the point where they were causing him some misery.  He couldn’t walk very well.  Chris twisted them out with a pair of pliers.  It wasn’t as bad as it sounds but they have had him sequestered the last few days because the wounds, though slight, were enough to attract unwanted attention from the hens.  He should be good to go in a few days.
