It wasn’t easy but I finally finished mowing and trimming the place about 4 o’clock Friday afternoon. Abigail was having her drama class, including teacher, over for an end-of-school party and she wanted the place to shine so the pressure was on. Truth is, I wanted to get it done even if there were no party because, though I mowed the south end a couple of weeks ago, that was, well, a couple of weeks ago and the grass it be growing. My John Deere is a sturdy fellow but I still had to mow at a slower rate than normal and in some places slower still. Since I mowed the north end earlier in the week, I had the satisfaction of having the whole place mowed up all at once. Unfortunately it looks like I’ll need to go over it again in the coming week.
Jill said our old neighborhood in Garland suffered from the six inches or so of rain recently. Duck creek runs through there and there are lots of houses that back right up to it, which makes life exciting for those residents at times like that I’m sure. Personally I prefer the high ground. We only got a quarter-inch shower this week. I hope that’s not the beginning of another dry spell.
Abigail’s party was a big success, I’m told. Friday evening was a really nice evening in spite of the shower that came through about the time the party was over. Before that the dozen or so kids were running all over the place like a school of fish. The only complaint I heard was a mild one from Kari who could have done without rain forcing a bunch of sweaty and mosquito repellant-perfumed kids to seek shelter in her house.
Our pair of mallards have been around this week. Their loyalty is appreciated. They have many more options now than they did a month or two ago.
Chris gave one of his beehives to another beekeeper. They were some given to him by yet another beekeeper, the father of one of Abigail’s schoolmates. These bees were much more aggressive than the other bees he had, so much so that our groundskeeper was getting stung in the line of duty. After three successful assaults and one where the bee lost, I told Chris they were too lively for my taste and that if they ever went after Joyce he and I both would have to leave home. While I was in favor of his destroying the SOBees, the fellow he gave them to is an experienced beekeeper and has places where he keep them away from people. I hope that solves the problem and the remaining bees haven’t learned any bad habits.
