Nice weather

It was a pretty nice week last week, dry, but nice. Oh, it blew pretty good Thursday. Joyce and I took the day off to visit the Texas Wild exhibit at the WT Cornett Library in Canyon. The photos and video, presented by a biology professor and grad student, were of Texas wildlife in case you hadn’t guessed. They were interesting and nicely done but too few. We would have liked to have seen more.

It was a nice day Wednesday when I worked out at the Bluff. There were two other fellows who showed up and helped me. Amazing what two or three elderly gentleman can get done. We are trying to get the grounds around the nature center cleaned up before growing season. We might make it if these guys come around some.

Joyce got the cherry and peach trees she ordered last fall Tuesday so we planted them when I got back from the Bluff. They are fair-sized trees but still bare-rooted. It was gratifying to see how moist the soil was when we planted them. When we planted the orchard we had to use Genna’s special digging tool, sort of a crowbar with a pointed end and a chisel end, when digging the holes because the ground was so dry. Here’s hoping that helps the new trees, along with all the established trees, prosper.

The apricot trees are in bloom. Joyce has planted two. The second one she ordered because it was supposed to bloom later in the season. The first one always gets zapped. Unfortunately the second tree preceded the first one in blooming by a couple of days. Oh well.

Abigail played in a volleyball tournament Saturday, the first since she suffered an ankle injury in basketball practice around Christmas. When I got there to watch her play, Kari told me that they had already played another team and got thumped. She said Abigail’s team including Abigail just wasn’t playing very well. The team I watched them play was pretty good and had several tall girls. Abigail is at least a head taller than the other girls on her team and was the only one who was comparable in height to several of the girls on the opposing team. Abigail’s team lost the first game but started getting it together and won the second game. They wound up losing the third and the match, but they kept it close. I thought Abigail did a pretty good job. Her slams were solid and her teammates began to give her more opportunities as the game went on. I left before they advanced to bracket play and haven’t heard how that came out.

Kari spent the day at the tournament and Rebecca spent the day with us, Chris being out of town. We had our Saturday bagel and Li’l r and I went to Wildcat Bluff after lunch. We took cameras and shot a few pictures, did a little hiking and generally spent a pleasant afternoon enjoying nature.
