Raw May Day

Temperatures in the 40s aren’t bad unless the wind is blowing at about the same speed as the temperature, as it was here on May 1.  If the workers on the High Plains were marching, and I don’t think they were, they were wearing their parkas.  As for myself and the lovely Mrs. Keeter, we hunkered down in the house and enjoyed a restful Sunday.  Oh, we did venture forth to attend church.  We even took Joyce’s brother Max with us.  He spent the night with sister Janice, who is recovering from surgery and would have been without adult supervision because the rest of the family was attending a wedding in Austin.  Janice is doing better, by the way.  She had been in considerable pain and the surgery relieved some of that, I’m told.

tree house irisGenna would have been gratified and maybe amazed at the iris bloom on SA this spring.  She planted a number of different varieties here and there on the place and they have provided a continuous parade of color since early March.

It puckered up and rained Friday.  We collected nearly an inch, close enough really to call it an inch.  Our rain barrel runneth over.  Things were already pretty green.  This latest moisture should keep them that way for a while.  I’ll need to start mowing right away to stay on top of it.

Speaking of mowing, while I was in the Dallas area last week a friend got Dad’s old Sears mower, which I hadn’t used in a couple of year, running.  I keep it because it has a grass catcher.  My other push mower and the lawn tractor are strictly mulching mowers.  The catcher allows me to interdict weeds that have seeded out.  The wild onions in the pasture were blossoming gloriously so I had at them with the Sears mower, collecting the blossoms and putting the clippins in the compost.  That won’t keep them from coming back but it will help control the spread.  I’m not sure the Sedge Ender worked on them but I see a few indications that it might have.  So far I’ve found nothing short of digging them up that gets rid of them and that is out of the question with such a large infestation.  It may take several applications of Sedge Ender over several years to turn the tide.

So my trip to the Metroplex was a success.  I had a pleasant but brief visit with the Wylie clan, played house with Vivian and submitted to a makeover by her and Sophia.  My dental appointment went as planned and my teeth should be good for a few more decades.  The weather looked iffy but the rain held off long enough to a play a round of golf with John and his buddy Tom.  They are both pretty good and it was fun to watch them.  I had my ups and downs but hit enough decent shots to make me look forward to playing again.  Kathryn was hospitable as usual and we gave the politicians a good cussing.
