Since we last spoke, two snows have come and one has gone. There have been lovely days and days more suitable for reading by the fire, which is what Joyce and I did all afternoon Sunday. We kept a cheery fire going and settled into our blankets with our iPads. There was hot chocolate, too. This was after church, of course. It was Joyce’s day to work in the coffee shop after church. Otherwise she claims she would have skipped church. The roads were slippery going and coming home but we managed without incident.
Our neighbors picked this weekend to drive to Denver for a volleyball tournament. Chris was in Austin all week and flew to Denver Friday evening where K, A & R had already arrived via automobile. The tournament was to last into Monday and they would get home late Monday evening but it seems the roads are bad and they are going to wait until Tuesday to drive home. Better safe than sorry. Meanwhile, I’ve been ministering to Tino the dog. We have settled into our routine and manage pretty well. We have a lot in common. Neither of us is overly burdened with brains so it doesn’t take much to satisfy us, full tummies, a stroll in the warm sunshine, a warm couch when it’s cold outside.
Sunday a week ago Joyce and I drove to Garland so we could attend the funeral Monday of Joyce’s cousin’s husband, Roswald Shurll in Fort Worth. We enjoyed the visit with the Wylies, brief though it was. We left Fort Worth at 3 p.m. and got home about 8:30. It was a cold day and we were glad to get come and be all snuggy in our beds.
On the nice days, we’ve been removing the dead from last year’s garden and getting it ready for this year. As we did last year, we are loading the dead stuff up in the pickup and hauling it off instead of shredding and composting it on the theory that that will reduce the insect pest population in the new garden. I will trim the grapevines soon, also. We also spread the accumulated compost in one of the garden beds which we will allow to lay fallow this year while the compost finishes breaking down. We did that last year to another bed and we will put last year’s bed into production this year.
Jill had to work Sunday, I think. I’m told her group was working on a project until somebody in another group came along and managed to take the project over. Seems the new group bungled the project and it got thrown back in Jill’s group’s lap with not much time before the scheduled release, or push as they call it. To make matters worse, Jill’s boss has been off on vacation so it has been Jill’s responsibility. I haven’t heard how it went but I’m sure she handled it with her customary aplomb. As most young families are, the Wylies are busy folk.
John seems to be recovering from the ablation procedure he had in January. He told me in an email last week that he played his first round of golf since the procedure and his doc was telling him he was doing well health wise. I played a round of golf myself Friday a week ago. I was on the Arrowhead course at Comanche Trail again and had the course to myself starting about 9 a.m. It was on the chilly side of OK for the first hole but after that I was comfortable. There were the usual ups and downs but overall it was a nice outing.
The Sports Illustrated 2015 swimsuit edition is out and Joyce and I went by Barnes & Noble to pick up a copy. You’ll recall SI shot some pics out at Wildcat Bluff last spring and supposedly they were in the new edition. I looked through the magazine but kept getting distracted and could never find anything that looked like Wildcat Bluff so we wound up not getting a copy.
Thanks for taking care of Tino for us! I think he misses you.
