7-6-1-1

(Friday, September 22) It was a pleasant morning out at the golfcourse ; a nice breeze, lots of sunshine and only one mosquito, which is now an ex-mosquito.  The golf gods were smiling on me and I shot a 7-6-1-1, which in the Keeter scoring system is landing seven greens in regulation, making six pars, one birdie and one hole-in-one.  And there was no one around to witness it when that HIO rolled in.  Yes, it was a short par three hole.  I used a nine iron and didn’t hit it very well but the ball hopped up on the green and rolled right in.  It’s not how, but how many, I’m told, and I’ll take it.

In other news, we have gotten really dry, as can happen in September.  The weather weenies are promising a soaking rain in the next few days.  I washed my car today and will water the yard tomorrow so I feel I’ve done my part to make it happen.

Kari hosted a team party last Tuesday evening.  Chris grilled weenies and the girls roasted somores.  Gosh those girls are tall.  We got to meet Coach Bolen.  Seemed like a nice person.  She’s a Tascosa grad.  Normally they play on Tuesday evening but the team had a by.

Rebecca continued her court dominance last weekend, winning both her singles match and her doubles.  It was a pleasure to get to see the Wylie women in action last weekend.  First it was Sophia playing volleyball, then Kaylee playing soccer.  They both did well.

Joyce picked the first of her watermelons.  She had given up on them since they got such a late start but the August rain put them in high gear and they grew like the weeds among the vines.  There are several more that have a chance of ripening before it freezes.  If the promised rain comes through that ought to put them over the top.

We have tried to create sort of a butterfly and hummingbird garden in the front with our plantings and we’ve been rewarded with lots butterflies this late summer/fall.  A species that mimics the monarch butterfly is particularly noticeable.  I think they are viceroy butterflies but am not sure.  They are particularly attracted to the gayfeather but also frequent the butterfly bush as well, particularly as the gayfeather wanes.

(Sunday, September 24) The rains came yesterday evening and during the night.  I emptied 1.04″ out of the gauge this morning.  Chances are good we’ll get more before this spell is over.  Abigail got home after 11:00 last night.  Her team travelled to San Angelo for a game.  It wasn’t nearly as satisfying as the Friday night game, I’m told.  Abigail didn’t get to play much and they went 0-3 against the San Angelo team.
