July wrap

We’ve had a busy month here on SA.  The neighbors got back from Switzerland last Monday evening and all were suffering from jet-lag, though not all would admit it.  Joyce and I held down the fort while they were gone, including administering to Tino the dog.  No small task, that.  Currently Abigail is in Denver at a volleyball camp and is scheduled to return Monday sometime.  School starts August 16th here in Amarillo, I believe, so there will be little respite for her when she gets back.  Tascosa has scheduled VB tryouts for the day she gets back, or maybe it’s the next day.  Then the team plays a tournament in Dallas the weekend after school starts, which is going to take her out of school almost as soon as it begins.

A couple of new characters joined the mall walkers.  Joyce has gotten to know them and learned they play in a band.  One of them actually plays in several bands contributing harmonica and vocal.  They played one Saturday evening at a restaurant named Taco Joe’s, which was fitting.  I think they call their band the Ordinary Joe’s.  At least one of them is actually named Joe.  It was a cloudy and relatively cool evening and we enjoyed dining on the patio where the band was playing.  It was a change of pace from our usual Saturday evenings and we enjoyed it very much.  Who knows, maybe we’ll try it again sometime.

Abigail left for the VB camp early Friday morning so I invited Li’l r to play golf with me that morning.  Turns out she had recently told Kari she hoped she could play golf with me soon so the timing was good.  We played on the par 3 on the south side of town, starting with hitting balls on the driving range.  Our method of play was for me to hit my shot, then Rebecca hit hers and she would move her ball to where mine was for the next shot, sort of a best ball approach.  She did fine for the first time out.  Not sure she scattered balls around any worse than I did the first time I tried the game.  Anyway, we had fun and I told her she could play with me again anytime she wanted to.  Unfortunately she has a tennis camp next Friday and only has that and one other Friday before school starts.

There have been a few rain showers recently, which is nice because the weather has been mostly hot and dry.

We’ve had to chase a couple of set of dogs off the place this week.  The second set was composed of several adolescent dogs.  Animal control rounded them up.  I wonder if someone dumped them somewhere close by.  I think that’s how we came by Tino.

I was standing out in the driveway waiting for Joyce this morning when there was what sounded like gunfire that came from the direction of Quadrille next door.  There were seven or eight shots and it sounded to us like someone shooting a hand gun.  We called the police, then headed for church.  We’ll probably never know whether it was what it sounded like.  I hope it wasn’t.
