May 1 The other night at the Texas Master Naturalist April meeting, the speaker was Bary Nusz and his topic was slot canyons. Seems the Panhandle has quite a few of them, particularly in Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Learn more and view his pictures at barynuszart.com.

Wet spell
Over the last couple of weeks, poor ol’ SA finally got the rain it so badly needed. We’ve gotten nearly seven inches so far in a month that averages 1.30. That will go a long way toward reaching our yearly average so that someone looking at yearly averages in the future would think 2018 was an OK year moisture-wise, when it definitely wasn’t, there being over six months from October last year to May this year when less than half an inch was accumulated. Over an inch fell on Friday evening before we left for Utah on Sunday, which was gratifying. Then I got a text from Chris on Monday saying 2.85 inches fell during the night. Another 1.65 fell closely on the heels of that and since then the weather has been cool and cloudy. There have only been three days in the last two weeks that there was no rain and this past Friday we got another .54. Yes, I know much more rain has fallen around the state, too much in fact, but here on the high plains a wet spell such as we’ve just had is just what was needed. Continue reading “Wet spell”
Rain, sort of
We got some intermittent showers yesterday, which was unexpected. These were more than the six to eight inch varieties (distance between drops) we’ve seen lately. It rained hard, just not for very long and .17 was all I could squeeze out of the range gauge this morning. The showers did cool us down some and the moisture didn’t hurt anything so we’ll take it. Wet August
While we were in Las Vegas last week, SA got rain nearly every day. It got rain before we left, too. I had largely caught up on the mowing before we left but, alas, now I am woefully behind again. We’ve tallied 4.69 inches for the month which, oddly enough, is still behind August last year, when we received more rain than any August of the last nine years and double the average. There is still plenty of time to surpass last August and we are only a half inch behind but I know how it can stop raining and not rain again for weeks. We shall see. Continue reading “Wet August”
Damp weather
Last rain we got was on the 4th of July. Chris claims we got half an inch. I’ll have to take his word for it since we were in Red River. Since then, hot and dry. Changing into work clothes in the shop I already feel damp and that changes to drenched once out in the sun and working. I particularly like the feel of beads of sweat rolling down my back Continue reading “Damp weather”
